Students follow different procedures for discontinuing attendance in courses depending upon the week of the semester the discontinuation occurs.
- Dropping courses:
- During the first three weeks of the fall and spring semesters, and the first week of the Summer Sessions 1 and 2, students may drop a course using CUNYfirst. Please refer to the Registar's office for the exact dates and times.
- This action is considered a program adjustment and the course or courses will not appear on the student's permanent record. Billing will be adjusted in accordance with the University policy on tuition refunds.
- Withdrawal from a course(s):
- Students may withdraw from a course(s), beginning with the fourth week and up to and including the end of the eighth week of the fall or spring semesters, by using CUNYfirst.
- In Summer Session (short), the current Summer Session Bulletin contains the exact dates and instructions for withdrawal from a course.
- In Summer Session (long), the period for course withdrawal begins with the second week and continues through the end of the third week. IMPORTANT: During the above withdrawal periods, no evaluation by faculty is required. A grade of "W" will appear on the student's official record and a refund, if due, will be made in accordance with the CUNY Policy on tuition refunds.
- Late course withdrawal : (Requires approval by the USSC)
- During the following periods, students wishing to discontinue attendance in a course must appeal for a late withdrawal from the Undergraduate Scholastic Standards Committee:
- Fall and spring semesters, after the eighth week and until the last day of class;
- Summer Session (short), after the first week and until the last day of class;
- Summer Session (long), after the third week and until the last day of class.
- A late course withdrawal will be approved by the USSC only for the most extenuating and urgent reasons and these must be documented. Evaluation of the student's work by faculty is required for all late withdrawal requests. If the USSC grants permission to withdraw and
- the instructor's evaluation is "passing," the grade of "W" will be entered on the student's permanent record, and this does not influence the GPA.
- the instructor's evaluation is "failing," the grade of "WF" (withdrawn failing) will be recorded. This counts as an F in the GPA.
- During the following periods, students wishing to discontinue attendance in a course must appeal for a late withdrawal from the Undergraduate Scholastic Standards Committee:
-
Leave of absence:(Withdrawal from all courses after the third week of the semester)
- A leave of absence is a withdrawal from all courses in which the student is currently registered.
- A leave of absence may be requested beginning with the fourth week and continuing through the fourteenth week of the fall and spring semesters. Students may request a leave of absence from the Counseling and Resource Center (Frese Hall, 1st Floor, 997-5420). Before permission may be given for a leave of absence, the student must have an exit interview with a professional member of the Counseling and Resource Center.
- During Summer Sessions 1 and 2, a leave of absence is not allowed. Dropping of courses is considered a withdrawal.
-
Upon approval of a leave of absence, non-penalty grades of "W" will be entered in the student record for all courses in which the student is currently registered
IMPORTANT: students who drop all their courses before the fourth week of a regular semester (fall & spring) are considered inactive, do not take a leave of absence, and must apply for reentry if they wish to continue their enrollment in the following semester.
- A leave of absence is a withdrawal from all courses in which the student is currently registered.
- Retroactive Withdrawals :(After the semester has officially ended)
- Retroactive withdrawals are student requests to withdraw from a course or courses after the semester has officially ended (the last day of classes).
- Students must complete the appropriate forms obtained from the USSC and provide documentation which confirms the circumstances which prevented the student from completing the course and/or withdrawing from the course within the time limits established by the College. Only the most extenuating and well-documented circumstances will be considered by the USSC.
- Appeals for retroactive withdrawals may be considered only for courses graded ABS, INC, FAB, FIN and WU. They will not be considered for assigned academic evaluations; that is, grades A+ through F, P, NC or R.
